At the local level, research ethics committees might bring in expertise from environmental sciences, critical animal studies, philosophy (beyond applied ethics), legal studies on animal rights and environmental personhood, and science and technology studies (STS). The risks and benefits should be assessed on a case-by-case basis and communicated transparently.
